Keystone Lake Economics

The economic benefits of a lake are expansive. Keystone Lake is no different. Providing power and flood control was an initial intent, however, the secondary benefits have been financially rewarding to the communities in which the lake resides.

Tourism Economics

The Keystone Lake and Dam are major economic contributors to the surrounding towns and communities. Recreation has been the leading financial supporter. Money is being brought in from the rentals of cabins and campsites as well as secondary gains such as the purchase of gas and supplies from local stores within the communities that surround Keystone Lake. Local businesses and restaurants see an increase in seasonal traffic to the lake. That tourism money is then kept within the community year-round. The lake allows for smaller populated communities to cater to tourists on a local, regional and national level. Tourism to the area allows for more job opportunities for local residents in many different industries surrounding the lake. The real estate and land surrounding shorelines are in high demand. Often towns surrounding lakes become popular for retirees or those seeking a second home.

Dam Economics

Keystone Lake and Dam provides power through the Public Service Company of Oklahoma for the majority of cities in Eastern Oklahoma. The Tulsa district of the US Army Corps of Engineers operates and maintains eight hydroelectric power plants with a generating capacity of 584 megawatts, one of them being the Keystone Lake. In addition to supply and power, Keystone Dam has helped with flood risk management. A rupture of Keystone Dam would cause damage to historical structures and parts of Route 66.
