OFF-SEASON FUN

The Keystone Lake area is full of fun activities twelve months out of the year! The lake is versatile in the activities it provides its visitors and even in the off-season, travelers will be entertained.

Fishing

Crappie and other fish found in the lake bite best during colder seasons because the fish tend to bunch up together and become more active in the colder waters. This makes it easier for fishers to have success while out on the lake. So bundle up, and consider taking a boat out this winter!

Camping

Tent camping is available year-round at Keystone State Park’s Green Country and Lake Country Lower for those willing to brave the cold. Lake Country Lower has electric sites available, but Green Country is fully primitive. The U.S. Corps of Engineers’ campsites, Brush Creek and Walnut Creek, are open all year for tent or RV camping. For more information on camping, visit our website under the camping section.

Trails

Keystone Ancient Forest hiking and mountain biking trails are available for visitors to explore continuously, even when other lake activities are closed for the season. The visitor center welcomes guests with a warm fire after hikes and travelers can sometimes find little spots of color on the trails from a beautyberry bush. For more information on the Keystone Ancient Forest trails visit our website under the hiking section.

Wildlife

The Keystone Lake area offers beautiful scenery year-round, especially when there is a chance to see snow on the trees or trails. The wintertime can bring out a sparkle to the landscape unlike during the summer. With fewer people out and campgrounds less full, travelers are likely to see more animals venture out into the terrain. Birdwatching can be an entertaining activity for those visiting the area in the colder months. Bald eagles are seen by travelers most often during November through March and pelicans fly in large numbers from late summer to early spring. Wading birds and Great Blue Herons are other species that can be seen along the banks and shorelines of the lake.
